My brothers wife has blond hair and blue eyes, he has dark brown hair and green eyes. Their 5 yr old daughter has blond hair and blue eyes, shouldn't her hair be darker / brown in color?

The daughter can have blonde hair and light eyes. Your brother must be heterozygous for dark hair (meaning he carries a gene for dark hair and one for light hair). It just so happened that his light hair gene mixed with her light hair gene making the daughter light haired. Same thing with eyes. For more information look up punnet squares

No, it's not like fingerpaints.... mix too colors and get a different shade, lol. If one parent has blonde hair or even a grandparent then it is not odd for a child to have that haircolor.

No. No reason why her hair should be brown just because your brother has brown hair.

BTW, my Dad and Mom were borth born with blond hair. My Mom grew up to have brown hair and my Dad's hair turned black. So, hair color can even change dramatically.

Not necessarily, my brother and his wife both have brown hair and brown eyes and their son has blond hair and blue eyes they both have parents with blue eyes so they both passed the gene to him. I am positive he is my brothers son too!!

No, it shouldn't. Hair color changes many times as we go through life, especially for those of us with brown/light brown/blonde hair.

Odds are that the darker color hair and eyes are going to be the dominant gene, but not always. Also, many children have blonde hair when they are young and it changes to brown. Even if both parents are dark hair and eyes...it is still possible to have a blonde, blue-eyed baby if the grandparents, etc are fair.

I have black hair and eyes. My husband has dark brown hair and hazel eyes. Three of my five children are blondes with hazel eyes. Genetics do not just come from the mother and the father, but the grandparents, great Grandparents, etc. Just because you have dark hair and eyes does not mean you are not carrying recessive blond and blue genes.

It's just different gene activation. We all get a mix, some are turned on, others not, it dictates how we look.

However, her hair colour may become less light as she ages, kids are known to have very light hair young, and have it fade later.

Genetically Blond hair and blue eyes are more dominant than Brown hair and brown eyes but in some instances the Brown can dominate the blond hair and blue eyes... maybe their next child will have dark hair and green eyes.

My mom, dad and sister all have dark brown straight hair and brown eyes, yet I was born with light blonde curly hair and light blue eyes. My hair was blonde for 15 years of my life before it started to change colors. It is now brown, but not as dark as my families. Then again my cousin is blonde haired and she just had a baby with a full head of dark black hair. Genetics are a funny thing.
